On November 26, 2004 Airlight Ltd.
unveiled the first large-scale application on Tensairity,
the Swiss engineering firm's innovative, and trademarked,
pneumatic beam concept, a hybrid technology of the simple
air beam and conventional beam structures. The installation,
a 1,700 square metre fabric cover for a parking structure
at the Montreux, Switzerland, rail station. And the
fabric chosen for this heavyweight project - Atex
5000 Aero fibreglass membrane.
The parking structure's owners commissioned designs for the
space, and Airlight's concept was selected for a trio of
reasons.
• The project's estimated costs were competitive with that of a brick-and-mortar
solution.
• The lightweight yet sturdy construction allows a span of 30m without
the need of obtrusive support columns.
• The structure's translucent fabric roof negates the
need to electrically light the surface-level parking area.
Airlight Ltd. needed to find a fabric that not only offered
the translucency that was esstential to the project, but
had elastic and airtight qualities. The fabric would also
need to be durable, fire resistant, maintainable, affordable
and have a lifespan of at least 25 years. Atex 5000 Aero
ticked all of these boxes and more. |

station in Montreux, Switzerland being dramically
illuminated with an ever-changing array of colours
and patterns by-way-of a theatrical spotlight system
that was incorporated into the structure's design. |
